ICCS Board of Directors
Greg Springer, President:
Greg is from Hillsboro and is the Regional Superintendent of Schools for Montgomery and Christian counties. Prior to his election in 1994, Greg served as Assistant Regional Superintendent. He taught many years in the Hillsboro School district. He takes great pride in his admiration of people who challenge the status quo and who “do instead of just talking about doing.” He has a long history of coaching boys sports and currently coaches a girls softball team.
Bill Jacobs, Vice President:
From Macomb, Bill is the Executive Director of the McDonough County Housing Authority. In addition to being a member of numerous housing organizations, he currently serves on the Macomb Salvation Army board, serves on the 9th Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council, chairs the Macomb Area Community Quality of Life committee, is past Vice President of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of McDonough County and is a volunteer reader for WIU Radio Information Service.
Mary Frances Tunison, Secretary:
Technically a retired school librarian from Jacksonville school district, Mary Frances is anything but retired. Living on her family farm near White Hall in Greene County, she understands the importance of being aware of your heritage and the history of your community. She is a member of the P.E.O, Home Extension, College Hill Literary Club, D.A.R., and Greene County Historical & Genealogical Society She series on the White Hall Library Board, Boyd Hospital Board, and the U of I Extension Council. In her spare time, she promotes civic engagement in her community and serves as a tutor for first grade students.
David R Reid, Treasurer:
David, a tax attorney from Springfield, currently is a Commissioner for the Court of Claims, and has been voted a “Leading Lawyer” by his peers. In his tax practice, he served as Senior Attorney and Trial Attorney for the Office of Chief Counsel of the IRS. Throughout his legal career, David has served on several not-for-profit boards and public interest organizations. Presently, he is President of the Center for Assisting Parochial Education, and a Board Member for the Springfield Art Association, the Lincoln Douglas Inn of Court, and Sacred Heart Griffin High Schools.
Jane Angelis:
Dr. Jane Angelis, from Carbondale, is director of the Illinois Intergenerational Initiative, a project located at Southern Illinois University. Jane spearheads a statewide effort to promote oral history projects in Illinois, and leads a Service Learning Task force of the Illinois State Board of Education. She is a strong believer in promoting lifelong learning and works daily to tap into the enormous leadership potential that exists in Illinois’ schools, human service organizations and among all generations.
Alex Arroyo:
Alex is a longtime activist in his hometown of Aurora. He has a bachelor’s degree in Business and is employed by United Airlines. He is a member of the League of United American Citizens (LULAC), serves on the boards of Weed & Seed and God’s Gym, serves as Vice Chair of the committee providing leadership and oversight for Team Illinois, and is Chairman of the Aurora Township Democratic Committee.
Dorothy Berry:
Rev. Dorothy Berry is Pastor of Wilkerson Chapel AME Church in Belleville, IL. When serving as an ICCS VISTA Volunteer, she worked tirelessly in the Washington Park area, a high crime, low income area of St. Clair County. Among her many activities is serving on the Boards of the Belleville Ecumenical Association, and the Belleville Caring for Our Neighbor Program.
Jim Broadway:
A Springfield resident, Jim is the founder and editor of State School News Service, a publication that focuses on any and all policies and legislation affecting schools, educators, pupils, and parents in Illinois. In the 1970s, Jim was the editor of the Edwardsville Intelligences and from 1978-1984, he was an editor for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. In 1981 he became the Globe’s Illinois Bureau chief and has been watching Illinois policy makers ever since. From 1984-1998, he was the Vice President for government and public relations for the Illinois Hospital Association. He also served as a part-time Illinois Media Liaison for the late U.S. Senator Paul Simon. Jim is a member of the Board of the Springfield Ballet Company.
Derek Eurales:
Bishop Derek Eurales, a resident of Cairo Illinois, is Pastor of First Opportunity Free Will Baptist Church and the Bishop of the Southern Illinois Annual of Free Will Baptist Churches and Moderator of the Mound City District. He previously served congregations in Tamms and Pulaski. He serves as director for Camp Victory, a summer camp located near Metropolis and is a dedicated volunteer at the Illinois Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion. Bishop Eurals retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections in 2002.
Claudia Fabian:
Claudia was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to Illinois in 1987. A former elementary school teacher, Claudia began career in human services working for the Illinois Migrant Head Start Project Division of Developmental Disabilities. In 2003, she became the Latino Coalition for Prevention Outreach Specialist for Central and Southern Illinois. She is presently an Assistant Department Chief for the Illinois Department of Public Health. Claudia has been involved in statewide groups commissioned by previous governors, specifically the Early Learning Council and the Children’s Mental Health Partnership. She presently serves on various committees and boards including the Family Matters Parent Training and Information Center, Amnesty International, and the Latino Coalition for Prevention.
Sheldon Keyser:
From Hoyleton in Washington County, Sheldon is retired from the USDA Rural Development. He is past president of the Illinois Rural Health Association and is a member of Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Services, Agriculture & Tourism Partners of Illinois, Rural Partners, and the International Economic Development Council. Sheldon is also a past president of ICCS Board.
Karl Maple:
Dr. Karl Maple, Professor Emeritus of Political Science from John A. Logan College, is a staff assistant to U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello. A resident of Elkville, Karl is a former member of the Jackson County Board and for more than 30 years served on the Elkville City Council. He was a founding member of Prisoner Family Support at the Marion federal penitentiary, served on the Board of Directors of the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children, and chaired the Jackson County Public housing Authority.
Michael Matejka:
Mike is from Bloomington and is Director of Governmental Affairs for the Great Plains Laborers District Council. A former member of the Bloomington City Council, Mike serves on the boards of the AFL-CIO, the Illinois State Labor Press Association, the McLean County Historical Society, and the Central Illinois Organizing Project. Mike is a community activist championing the “Hate: Not in Our Town” campaign in Bloomington. Mike is the immediate past president of the ICCS Board.
Roger Ryan:
A graduate of the University Of Illinois School Of Law, Roger Ryan practiced law in Springfield for 30 years before his retirement in 2007.
Sandra Schmidt:
Sandra Schmidt lives in Greenfield where she is the Executive Director of Greene County Economic Development Group, Inc. A former small business owner and ICCS VISTA Volunteer, Sandra was the catalysis behind the development of this grassroots organization which is now a true vehicle for change in Greene County. From 2005-2009, Sandra served as a Rockbridge Township Trustee. She has served on the boards of the Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association, and the Greenfield Public Library. She is presently a member of the board for West Central Development, an advisory and service organization serving units of local government in Calhoun, Christian, Jersey, Greene, Macoupin, Montgomery, Morgan, Scott, and Shelby counties.
Mike Zahn:
Michael D. Zahn is the Business Manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 965. He attended college at Utah State. Mike has been in the industry nearly 38 years. In this time he has worked as an operator, an Organizer, a Business Representative and for the past eight years as the Business Manager of the Operating Engineers. He is the Chairman of the Illinois State Council of Operating Engineers. Mike is involved with several other committees and boards in an effort to promote infrastructure needs for Springfield and the state of Illinois.
